Colorfastness and UV resistance
For most buyers, fading is the number-one failure mode. Solution-dyed acrylic from established mills (Sunbrella, Dickson, Sattler and equivalent solution-dyed lines) is rated for over 1,000 hours of lightfastness and routinely carries multi-year colour warranties. Because pigment is added to the molten acrylic before the fibre is spun, the colour cannot wash or bleach out of the surface.
Polyester sits in the middle: acrylic-coated or PVC-backed polyester resists UV reasonably for a few seasons but visibly fades in high-sun climates. PVC-coated fabric holds colour well because the pigment lives in a thick surface coating, though chalking can appear late in life. For sun-belt regions and any south-facing installation, solution-dyed acrylic is the safest specification.
Waterproofing and breathability
There is a real trade-off here. Acrylic is woven and water-repellent: it sheds light rain when pitched at 14° or more, but it is not a roof. Crucially, it breathes, so heat and moisture escape rather than building up underneath — which is why acrylic stays cooler and resists mildew.
PVC-coated fabric is fully waterproof and the right call when the awning must keep a terrace dry in heavier weather, or for vertical drop screens.
